In this work we will present the most common diseases in the Indies according to the sixteenth century-Spanish physicians Juan de Cárdenas and Pedro Arias de Benavides. Our objective is to show that Cárdenas and Arias de Benavides, based on classical medical authorities, believed that the most common diseases in this region were caused by its warm and humid climate. At the same time, based on medieval natural authorities and an environmental determinism, they justified their prejudices against groups at the bottom of the Colonial Spanish social hierarchy like the Africans and native Americans, considered responsible of the syphilis pandemic.
