Anthropology: Knowledge of Man (2016)

unapi

Anthropology as a science or social science is a modern invention, unknown as a separate discipline in the ancient world. However, many ancient writers devoted works, or sections of works, to ideas about other peoples living beyond the Greek and Roman worlds, and to ideas of the origins of humans and the development of society in prehistory. These two topics are closely related in ancient thinking and, taken together, may reasonably be thought to represent what we would call “anthropology” to ancient thinkers. The range of ancient sources on anthropological ideas is huge, transcending the boundaries of genre; anthropological ideas, certainly not limited to scientific texts, can be found in works as diverse as love poetry, history, epic, ethnography, philosophy, and comedy, among others.
