Roman Interior Design (2016)

unapi

This chapter addresses the application of science and technology to Roman decorative media and explores how artisans planned and executed works of art and objects that decorated Roman interiors. These media, more precisely, encompass those realized in situ such as wall paintings, stucco, and mosaic compositions as well as sculpture, furniture, and tableware, which were made off site. In the Roman world (or at any time, for that matter), artistic practices and processes were neither static nor universal, so for purposes of clarity, we focus broadly on the early Roman imperial period, and draw heavily from evidence garnered in the excavations of the largest concentration of decorative media from the Roman world in the Bay of Naples from the second century BCE through 79 CE.
