Maps are a universal feature of human civilization, guiding travelers from one point to another. They take many forms and serve countless purposes. In ancient Mediterranean cultures, useable “maps” – in the modern sense – were verbal, including periploi and Itineraries, which listed places along a route as one would reach them on a journey. Graphic maps were rare and were almost inevitably monumental. Nonetheless, an abiding sense of curiosity about the world and the deployment of places within the world imbued Greek and Roman culture and literature, and we find cartographic excurses in technical literature and histories, as well as in poetry.
