We know that the first medical corpus, attributed to Hippocrates in the fifth century BCE, contained advanced knowledge of surgery. Unfortunately, most of the major written sources have been lost. It is only due to the encyclopedist Celsus that the core of this knowledge, datable from Hippocrates’ time to his own, exists today. Later works, including Galen's, are devoid of innovation.Ancient surgery was both theoretical and practical. Its practice quickly reached a high degree of technical skill, making it possible to treat a great number of pathologies. The physician-surgeon was a common-place figure in Greco-Roman times, especially on the battle field. Nevertheless, the reputation of his art was met with distrust since it was often associated with cruelty and danger – a reputation that would persist for centuries.
