Of all the medical sciences Pharmacy maintained the closest link between the rationalizing medicine of the Greek written tradition and the unwritten folklore of the Mediterranean basin. Pharmacy was both a specialized cluster of professions (growers, gatherers, traders, compounders, researchers) and an everyday practice carried out by self-medicating members of ancient communities. The study of ancient pharmacy is also on the cutting edge of modern research into ancient medicine; new techniques in the study of material remains (both of medicines and bodies) continue to inform the way modern scholars understand and approach the study of the way drugs were processed and used in the treatment of disease.
