Ancient Optics: Theories and Problems of Vision (2016)

Many philosophers, geometers and other scientists took an interest in the causes and the phenomena of vision. This chapter examines the four main kinds of explanation for the activity of sight, reviewing the arguments offered in support of each theory and ancient criticisms of their weaknesses. It considers how each theory attempted to account for the perception of basic visual features such as color, shape, size, and distance, and outlines the development of the field of catoptrics.
