Roman Monumental and Public Architecture (2016)

unapi

The Romans developed a tradition of monumental architecture that was originally based on the Etruscan and Greek heritage available to them in Italy, which by the late Republic evolved into a number of new forms, with an innovative use of construction materials, techniques, and building forms. In the first century BCE the city of Rome was totally rebuilt, as Roman commanders realized that architecture was an element of political power. The new Imperial system that came into place after 30 BCE continued this program. At the same time, Roman architecture spread beyond Italy into the expanding Roman world, at first through the medium of allied kings. New Roman cities in the western Empire brought Roman ways there; in the East Roman architecture fit into the existing urban environments of the Greek world. By the third century CE, as building in the city of Rome declined, Roman architecture extended from one end of the empire to the other.
