This chapter provides an overview of the Renaissance reception of Greco-Roman science, especially medicine, mechanics, and physics, together with an introduction to the role played by ancient sources in the Renaissance epistemological debate on what is science and how scientific disciplines should be classified and ordered according to a hierarchic criterion. Chronologically, this chapter focuses specifically on the period between 1500 and 1650; geographically, on the reception of Greco-Roman science in the intellectual milieu of Italian universities.
