The translation and transmission of ancient scientific knowledge before ca. 1500 occurred across a broad range of cultural and linguistic boundaries. In this chapter we shall explore the translation and transmission of Greek and Roman scientific knowledge through a variety of cultural, linguistic, religious, and political contexts, linked to locations in Eurasia and North Africa. We shall investigate the process of translation, its challenges, and how readers and translators engaged with ancient scientific treatises and changed these “living texts” for their own purposes.
