Arms and Weapons (2016)

unapi

The Greeks and Romans considered war an art, and their weaponry was twofold: offensive weapons were conceived to eliminate or neutralize the enemy quickly; defensive weapons were intended to avoid serious bodily injuries. These elements influenced the manufacturing, shape, and decoration of weaponry, as well as representations of warriors. Offensive weapons included spears and javelins, swords and daggers, axes and hammers, slings and bow. Protective equipment, which responded to such weapons, comprised mainly body armor, shield, greaves, and helmets. This chapter explores both offensive and defensive armaments from the Greek Bronze Age to the late Roman Empire.
