This chapter examines Greek and Roman theories on bodies of water, including the nature of the ocean and the origins of rivers and seas. Water shaped Mediterranean economy, travel, warfare, and it defined Mediterranean culture, religion, mythology, and literature. Ancient thinkers were deeply curious about tidal activity, salinity, and the summer Nile flood. Many important thinkers including Homer, Aristotle, Poseidonius, Vitruvius, and Pliny the Elder contributed to a centuries-long dialogue on hydrological theory.
