The study of health and disease in past societies can be an invaluable source of information as the health of a group results from complex interactions between genetic makeup, cultural parameters, and the natural environment. Paleopathology, the study of diseases in the past, and paleoepidemiology, in which the unit of analysis focuses on the population can be approached through written sources, artistic representations, and the study of human remains at a macroscopic, microscopic, and molecular level. This chapter offers a brief overview of pathology and epidemiology in the Greco-Roman world with an emphasis on human skeletal data, and highlights the potential of paleopathology and paleoepidemiology to elucidate the dynamic response of humans to challenges from their cultural, social and physical environments.
