This chapter surveys the wide range of different approaches to athletic training in the ancient world, and the wide variety of different views and valuations of that activity. It looks first at the paidotribai whose expertise lay primarily in teaching athletic technique. It then turns at more length to the gymnastai who devoted themselves primarily to the art of regimen, i.e., the use of exercise along with related techniques like massage and diet for maintenance of health. It looks in turn at Plato, the Hippocratic On Regimen and Galen to demonstrate that the majority of writers on this topic tended to be highly critical of the training techniques used for competitive athletics. The exception, discussed in the final section, is Philostratus’ Gymnasticus, which attempts to rehabilitate the art of training athletes for competition as a serious and complex intellectual discipline.
