Ellen Welch set herself the challenging task of writing a history of the British NHS whilst being neither a historian nor, as she freely acknowledges, an ‘NHS expert’ (p.6). She is instead a doctor who has worked in both public and private health care in the UK and in New Zealand and as cruise ship doctor in the American system. This diversity of experience has given her a good appreciation of the value of the NHS and the very negative consequences of American-style private health care. Her concern for the future of the NHS is admirable, and she has sought to tell its story in a short ‘digestible book’ (p.6) that centres on 13 personal accounts of the NHS.
